It hurts when we don’t hit our goals. Like, really stings. We may even be disappointed in ourselves, which is way worse than any physical pain if you ask me.
And while you may logically understand that it happens to everyone, we tend to keep those moments off of Instagram. Because of that, we don’t see how everyone else is coping with the natural downswings that come with being human. We almost forget that other folks also struggle with not meeting goals, launches that didn’t take off, and so on.
So, I’m going to keep it real today and share a perspective shift you may need to hear if you didn’t hit your goals last year and how you can make consistent progress on this year’s goals.
Why You Didn’t Accomplish Your Goals Last Year
First of all, it’s okay. Not hitting your goals isn’t a commentary on you as a person or your abilities. Your accomplishments aren’t directly tied to your worth as a human being.
Second of all, stop putting Band-Aids on your problems. We think if we buy one more strategy intensive, course, this or that, it’ll fix the problem. It’ll be the silver bullet that will magically wake us up one day and pop “the right answer” into our heads.
That will never happen.
See, when you buy those small Band-Aids, you’re getting a quick hit of “I did something to take action!” but you’ll inevitably crash. It’s like the business version of a sugar high.
Also, you create a massive storm of confusion for yourself. Each time you buy a strategy intensive with a new person, you wipe out all of the strategy you had in place before. How can you make progress to hit your goals when you’re always starting at zero again?
This is true with each new course, workbook, or other bandage you put over your problems. You aren’t doing the work to get to the root of WHY you aren’t making progress, whether you’re having cash flow problems, slow client leads, feast-or-famine periods, or your particular flavor of business struggle.
You’re looking for people to tell you exactly what to do instead of looking at a holistic picture of yourself and your company.
What Prevented You From Taking Action on Your Goals?
Success Tip: Dig in to discover what’s at the root of not meeting your goals.
I’d bet dollars to donuts that you didn’t achieve your goals because of fear and belief that it isn’t possible. As big as you want to dream, there’s a voice telling you that you don’t know how to do it. You assume that voice is right.
But it’s wrong. It’s so wrong.
When doing something new, no one ever knows how it’ll end. Otherwise, why bother doing it?
But when you keep listening to that voice that says, “I don’t know,” you get caught up in the not knowing, and eventually, not doing. Then, it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy and you don’t make progress on the goals you set for yourself.
The lack of consistency and slapping a Band-Aid on top of the problem coupled with these fears blocks out your intuition and almost always ensures that you won’t take aligned, intentional action to meet your goals.
How To Ensure You’ll Always Meet Your Goals in the Future
Stop trying to fix big business problems with a little Band-Aid!
Okay, it’s a little more nuanced than that. But it really does come down to taking responsibility and opening your eyes to the bigger problems at hand. Address the pain points head-on instead of masking the symptoms with a temporary fix.
Instead of buying yet another course where you have to start over with yet another strategy and framework, invest in something that’s holistic and that can help you from all different angles.
Success Tip: Invest in holistic support that can help you achieve your goals.
At the end of the day, what we all need to succeed is someone who knows us. This is a coach or a mentor who’s there consistently. They understand who you are, what motivates you, what your fears are. They know your family, your dogs, your best friend. They know you. That’s how you get to the next level and hit your goals every time.
